Joining the Conga Line for Breast Cancer

Alt

Tamela will join motorcycle riders from the US and Canada vying to raise the most money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

They’ll meet in Cheyenne, WY on July 7, 2010.

This is the third year for the Conga ride and organizers expect over 50 riders to make it to Cheyenne from starting points all over North America. But hundreds of other cyclists will also participate in the effort by joining the ride for a mile or a day or a state along the way.

Tamela has riders waiting to ride with her through WV, IN, IL, WI, SD, and WY. After the Conga Line meets in Cheyenne, she'll continue with other Conga riders to her west coast destination, Bend, Oregon. There, she and co-author Matt Davio will assemble their research into the book, Tradeoffs: Leveraging the Longs & Shorts of Life.

Simone Christiano, a breast cancer survivor from Durham, NC will come to Charlotte for Kickstands UP and ride part of the way to WV with Tamela and other Charlotte cyclists. Says Christiano, "I was diagnosed in 2008. After a lumpectomy they said it was precancerous and all gone. Six months later, it was back with NO symptoms. What followed was another lumpectomy, and as I was prepping for radiation, they found more. I'm a nurse, and there was no way I was gonna do this every six friggin' months, so I told them to take it. The whole damn thing. This is an insidious disease; it's sneaky and downright mean, and has to be stopped. I would ride a thousand miles tomorrow if it would help, and will gladly do so next year if you do it again!"

Financial contributions are facilitated by PayPal.

Tamela says she can feed herself for $20 a day and run the bike on a similar amount. She has asked hotel chains to provide free lodging.

If PayPal contributions exceed her needs, all proceeds will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
